Artists Profile
My art career started with painting and went on to include batik, wall hangings, tapestry and sculptural
baskets. While living in Greece I learned to admire Coptic and Byzantine art which influenced my work in
batik and later in tapestries. I designed batik fabrics for clothing in the sixties when clothing was more
costume than covering. It was wonderful fun and a great time for all craftsmen when the line between fine crafts and art was disappearing.
After studying tapestry with Ken Uyamura at the University of Miami, I taught weaving privately and at
Grove House (a gallery and school in Coconut Grove). Working with interior designers, I made wall hangings
for Arvida, Eastern Airlines, the Univ. of Miami, and other clients, even banners for churches, and once a
hanging made of old ropes for a yacht. Exhibiting my work at invitational and juried shows, outdoor art
festivals, and galleries, I was gratified to receive many awards and to have my work included in the Florida
Craftsmen’s permanent collection at the Univ.of Fla. Since moving to Anna Maria I have enjoyed making baskets
as art forms, and fantasy fish, one of which hung on the White House Christmas tree some years ago.
Life away from art involved raising two sons, taking part in underwater archaeology expeditions in Greece
(the underwater city of Pheia), in Haiti (searching for Columbus’ ship, the Santa Maria), and explorations
in Honduras and Belize. Other activities that I have enjoyed are riding in field trials (bird dogs), playing
team tennis, bridge, and, of course, there is the beach. My husband, Wally, and I enjoy full time living on
the island in our 1924 remodeled beach house. Our travels off island usually take us to California and
Vermont to spend time with our grandchildren, family and friends.
